"I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. Life's a bitch. You've got to go out and kick ass."
Maya Angelou
In honor of yesterday being Women's Day I've decided to do a list of some of my favorite fictional feminist icons. I know, I should have posted this yesterday, buuuuut... Time and stuff, and... Yeah... I don't have any decent excuses.
Here are some fabulously amazing not-real-women in no particular order, 'cause difficult.
Which are some of your favorite fictional feminist icons? Do you agree with mine? Tell me in the comments.

1. Xena from Xena: Warrior Princess
oh8 |
"I like to be creative in a fight. It gets my juices going."
She looks hella cool with her armour and swords and shit, and she's a goddamn lesbian warrior princess, for fuck's sake! Do I have to say more? Don't think so...
2. The Craft Girls from The Craft
LEXLOTHOR |
"We are the weirdos, mister."
A great movie with four wicca believing, magic practicing, weird beachy ritual doing, weirdo being, cool goth clothing wearing teen witches. 90s feminism in film form.
3. Kat Stratford from 10 Things I Hate About You
rnlaing |
"Expressing my opinion is not a terrorist action."
She's not what 90s teen romantic comedies are made of. She's sarcastic, proud and unsociable, but she's also caring, outspoken and non-conformist. For the first time I saw a teenager in a movie that said out loud that was a feminist. Hell yeah, Kat!
4. Fa Mulan from Mulan
Shtut |
"You said you trust Ping! Why is Mulan any different?"
First of all, she cuts off her hair perfectly with a damn sword and let's be honest, nobody does "fuck this shit, Imma destroy the Huns and save China" better than her.
5. Daenerys Targaryen from A Song of Ice and Fire
Kuvshinov-Ilya |
"Woman? Is that meant to insult me? I would return the slap, if I took you for a man."
She has a fuckload of names, goes around saving slaves, destroying assholes only with her words and besides all that, she also has not one, not two, but three ginormous dragons as pets. If that's not cool, I don't know what is.
6. Zoë Washburne from Firefly
TristanArtSD |
"Sir? I think you have a problem with your brain being missing."
She's hard as nails and she can kill you with a look, but she's also loyal, beautiful and passionate. She adores her husband as much as he adores her, and she would do anything for the crew and Captain Mal, even if that means smacking him in the head for his nonsense.
7. Buffy Summers from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
PatrickBrown |
"From now on, every girl in the world who might be a slayer, will be a slayer. Every girl who could have the power, will have the power…Can stand up, will stand up. Every one of us. Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?"
Yaaaas ma queen, slaaaay! (Sorry, I had to) Anyway... She's an amazing role-model, she's vulnerable and strong and fun. And she wants to share her power with all women. She also show us that you can like girly girl stuff like makeup and clothes and still beat monster's asses. And without even breaking a nail.
8. Pocahontas from Pocahontas
Vassantha |
"Sometimes the right path is not always the easiest."
John Smith: "You're all a bunch of savages!" Pocahontas: "Actually..." John, just shut it a enjoy the colors of the wind, dude.
9. Princess Leia from Star Wars
DaveBardin |
"Why, you stuck up, half-witted, scruffy-looking, Nerf-herder!"
If someone with two cinnamon buns in their head, can keep her dignity, you know she's great. But she doesn't only have an iconic hairstyle, she has an outspoken, fierce and compassionate personality. And she's a fucking space princess.
10. Elizabeth Bennet from Pride and Prejudice
Emarii |
"My courage always rises with every attempt to intimidate me."
I an era where women had to be those perfect silent ladies, she wasn't. She's not gonna take any shit from no man. Even if you're the gorgeous Mr. Darcy.
11. Arya Stark from A Song of Ice and Fire
Robbertopoli |
"I wasn't playing. And I don't want to be a lady."
She doesn't want to be a little lady, but she doesn't want you to treat her like a boy. She's a smart and strong girl with a list. You better not to be on it. Really.
12. Ellen Ripley from Alien
BobbyRubio |
"Did IQs just drop sharply while I was away?"
The Queen of hardcore women! She's brave, strong, intelligent, level-headed and determined. She's a survivor. And she can deal with those fugly aliens like no other.
13. Hermione Granger from Harry Potter
OlchaS |
"Just because it’s taken you three years to notice, Ron, doesn't mean no one else has spotted I'm a girl!"
She's smart, has the patience to deal everyday with two boy-wizards and has amazing magical habilities. She doesn't need to kick your butt, she can make you kick it yourself.
14. Sarah Connor from Terminator
klaatu81 |
"The unknown future rolls toward us. I face it, for the first time, with a sense of hope. Because if a machine, a Terminator, can learn the value of human life, maybe we can too."
She's the epitome of a kick-ass woman. She'll shoot the hell out of you and all your electrical appliances if she thinks you look half-wrong at her son.
15. Dana Scully from The X Files
artilustra |
"Nothing happens in contradiction to nature, only in contradiction to what we know of it."
In a macho-like world like the FBI it could be difficult for a woman, but not for her. She'll just roll her eyes at their stupidity and get on with her life.

Brienne of Tarth from A Song of Ice and Fire / Cristina Yang from Grey's Anatomy / Clarke Griffin from The 100, Sansa Stark A Song of Ice and Fire / Veronica Mars from Veronica Mars / Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games / Lara Croft from Tom Raider / Roberta from Now and Then / Lisa Simpson from The Simpsons / Willow Rosenberg from Buffy the Vampire Slayer...
