When we meet her she's so cute, and young and full of teenage annoyance, that we think she could never be the clever and resourceful badass she's later in the story.
Maybe the world has made her the way she is, maybe all the bad shit has made her a Slytherin, or maybe the stupid teenybopper we though she was, was never real. She wanted to be the queen since the beginning, after all.

She doesn't need no man with rippling pectorals to save her, she can do it on her own. Self-preservation is her middle name, even to a fault.
She can be sarcastic, closed off, cynical, harsh and almost cruel, but her experience has made her this way. She doesn't trust easily, but when she does, she's gonna go for a swim to the fucking River Styx for you.
She's rational, resourceful and a perfectionist. Everything she does is done flawlessly and with detail. She controls everything about her appearance, because she has to. And she's good at it.
But she's also mysterious and perceptive, which she will use to her advantage. She can manipulate someone with the other person not even realizing it. It comes with the job, I guess.

He's cunning and shrewd and quick-witted and all of those fancy words that Slytherin people are known for. He's also narcissistic and arrogant and really ambitious. He thinks he deserves the world, and he's going to make sure the world knows it.
His power is basically a form of manipulation and he loves it. For goodness sake, he's the God of Mischief, what else can he do? Besides, he obviously looks fabulous in green and gold.
